Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed in a letter to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on recently that Meta was pressured by the White House in 2021 to limit certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire.

“In 2021, senior members from the Biden Administration, such as the administration, constantly urged our teams for an Support For People With Disabilities extended period to censor certain COVID-19 content, such as satirical content, and showed significant frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said that the influence he felt in 2021 was “wrong” and he feels regretful that his company, the parent of Facebook & Instagram, was not more vocal. He added that with Empathy the “benefit of hindsight and new information,” some decisions made in 2021 that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“As I mentioned to our teams at the time, I strongly believe that we should not lower our content standards due to pressure from any government from either side â€" and we’re ready to push back if something like this occurs in the future, ” Zuckerberg wrote.

Though Biden later revised these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at the time that misinformation spread on social media was a “serious threat to public health.”

A White House spokesperson responded to Zuckerberg’s letter, saying the administration at the time was encouraging “responsible actions to protect public health Cyberbullying and safety.”

“Our stance has been consistent and clear: we think tech companies and private entities should take into account the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent choices about the content they share, ” according to the White House representative.

Zuckerberg further noted in the letter that the FBI alerted his company about potential Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and the Social Media Criticism Ukrainian firm Burisma affecting the 2020 election.

That fall, he said, his team temporarily demoted a New York Post report alleging Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the report.

Zuckerberg said that since then, it has “been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in hindsight, we should not have reduced its visibility.”

Meta has since updated its policies and procedures to Social Dominance “make sure this doesn’t happen again” and will no longer demote content in the US while waiting for fact-checkers.

In the letter to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said he will avoid repeating the actions he took in 2020 when he assisted “electoral infrastructure.”

“The idea here was to ensure local election authorities across the country had the necessary resources to facilitate safe voting during a pandemic,” Viral Video said the Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg mentioned the initiatives were intended to be neutral but acknowledged “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” He said his goal is to be “neutral” so he will not make “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “has admitted that the Biden-Harris administration Jay Weber pressured Facebook to censor Americans, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long faced scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who have accused Facebook and other large technology platforms of being biased against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has stressed that Meta impartially enforces its rules, the narrative has become entrenched in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers have specifically scrutinized Facebook’s decision

to restrict a report by the New York Post about Hunter Biden.

In testimony before Congress in the past years, Zuckerberg has sought to bridge the divide between his social media company and policymakers to little effect.

In a 2020 Senate hearing, Zuckerberg acknowledged that many of Facebook’s employees are left-leaning. But he maintained that the company takes care not to allow political bias to seep Viral Moment into decisions.

Writing for the majority, Justice Amy Coney Barrett said, “to establish standing, the plaintiffs must show a substantial risk that, in the near future, they will experience harm that is directly linked to a government defendant.” Coney Barrett continued, “because no plaintiff has carried that burden, none has standing to seek a MAGA Supporters preliminary injunction.”
